Friendika is a distributed social network application which runs on commodity hosting platforms - PHP/MySQL/Apache. (If you can install Drupal or Wordpress you can probably install Friendika).

Friendika provides many of the same features which make conversational networks such as Facebook so appealing to use, but without any of the attendant privacy issues.

A single Friendika installation supports up to several thousand members.

But here's the cool part... Every Friendika installation can connect with any other to create a social network without limits. (And one that nobody can own or control).

Friendika can also connect to your friends in other social networks - such as Status.Net, identi.ca, GNU-social, and Google Buzz. The list of supported networks is growing.

o Server-to-server message encryption (without requiring SSL and server ceritficates) on supported networks

o Participate in private conversation groups - keep your conversations with drinking buddies away from your employer and ex-girlfriends

o Send private "email" to any Friendika friends - even those on different sites.

o Private profiles - assignable to individual friends, so your church friends don't see your witchcraft hobby, and only the people you choose can see your phone number.

o Opt-in to site and global directory - this is like the phone book, and by default you are "unlisted".
