Schoolboy, 17, plummets to death after falling asleep on edge of balcony and rolling over

A schoolboy has died after he fell asleep sunbathing on the edge of a balcony and rolled over - plummeting to his death.

Tom McNeill, 17, had been holidaying in Bulgaria's Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach with his best friend's family when he fell from the first floor balcony on Sunday.

It was the first time Tom, from Carlisle, Cumbria, had been away on holiday without his parents.

His family believe the teen fell asleep, before rolling over and plunging from the balcony.

Tom's devastated parents, David and Sallie McNeill, said in a statement: 'Tom was the salt of the earth. A charming, mature and loving boy who always put family first.

'He was the most wonderful and loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, boyfriend and friend.

'Tom touched everyone he met in a quiet unassuming way and he had such a vision of what he wanted and where he wanted to go in life.

'He has left a hole in our lives that we cannot ever imagine will heal but he is with us in all we do. We love him so much.'

Tom, who was due to sit his A levels next year, phoned home on Saturday, to wish his brother, Jack, a happy 15th birthday and to speak to his family.

His girlfriend, Natasha Sword, was on holiday with friends in Spain yesterday.

Russ Wallace, headteacher of Richard Rose Central Academy where Tom had just finished year 12, said: 'It is an absolute tragic accident.

'Tom was a fine young man who had his whole life ahead of him. He was well thought of by everyone here and well respected by staff and students alike.

'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time and we will do everything we can to support them.'

Hundreds of Tom's friends have paid tribute to him on his Facebook page.

Louise Park wrote: 'Tom you are the nicest lad iv ever met always knew how to put a smile on someone else who was upset/bad mood.

'Never seen you without a smile on your face, going to be missed by everyone but one thing is your not going to be forgotten, my heart goes out to your family and girlfriend, take care up there. sleep tight tom, rest.in.peace'

Another school friend Niall Baxter added: 'Can't believe it. One of very few people who I can say is such a genuinely nice person and you'll be missed so so much.

'Always with a smile on your face and always able to keep everyone around you happy. Rest in Peace, Tom.'

Tom's parents have been told it will be between seven and 10 days before they can bring his body home. dailymail.co.uk/
