Instant and free: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg adds another string to his bow with Facebook Messenger

As Blackberry’s BBM is acknowledged as the dominant means of communication during the UK riots, Facebook has announced its own rival messaging service.

Facebook Messenger, which was launched yesterday in the U.S., allows members of the social networking site to send free instant messages using Android and iOS mobile phones to anyone in their 'friends' list.

The new Facebook app, designed by Facebook engineer Lucy Zhang, also allows people to send group messages.

If message senders add a location, all the people in a messaging group can find each other on the map.

Photos can also be attached to messages, enabling everyone else to see and comment on pictures the original message sender might be looking at.

Messages are delivered through notifications and texts, enabling friends to receive them immediately.

Facebook Messenger will rival Blackberry's popular BBM service

‘It isn't always easy to know the best way to reach someone on their phone. Should you send an email or text? Which will they check first? We think messaging should be easier than that,’ writes Zhang on the Facebook page dedicated to the launch.

‘You should be able to write a message, click “Send” and know that you will reach the person right away.’

Zhang was the original creator of Beluga, the group messaging service acquired by Facebook earlier this year which has provided the basis of the new messaging service

All conversations are stored in one place, including texts, chats, emails and messages, allowing users to see the full history of all their messages. dailymail.co.uk
