Cairo, Dozens of supporters of Hosni Mubarak clashed with police Monday as the former Egyptian president and his sons appeared at a court hearing.

The demonstrators threw rocks as security forces worked to restore order.

Mubarak is accused of ordering the killing of anti-government protesters in an effort to quash the Egyptian uprising that forced him from power in February.

About 840 people died and more than 6,000 were wounded in the 18 days of uprising that toppled Mubarak, bringing an end to his 30-year reign, according to Amnesty International.

As during a court appearance earlier this month, the ailing former leader was wheeled into court on a hospital gurney and placed in a cage -- a standard procedure in Egyptian criminal trials.

He was the first leader since this year's Arab Spring revolts to face a judge.

Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was tried in absentia after he was deposed in January and fled to Saudi Arabia.

Mubarak's two sons, Alaa and Gamal, also are scheduled to appear Monday in a Cairo court where they face the same charges as their father. They also have been charged with corruption.

Mubarak and his sons have pleaded not guilty.

On Sunday, a judge postponed the trial of Habib El Adly, Egypt's former interior minister and a member of Mubarak's inner circle. He also faces trial on charges he ordered the killing of protesters.

If convicted, El Adly faces the death penalty.

A judge adjourned the court proceedings after lawyers requested postponement of the hearing until after the holy month of Ramadan.
