Two young men died today after the car they were in hit a tree then burst into flames.

The driver and passenger were unable to get out of the vehicle as flames engulfed the Toyota Celica which had slewed off the road in the middle of the night.

Police said that they did not yet know who the men were or when their car left the road near Henley-on-Thames, South Oxon., and crashed into the tree.

A major investigation into the double death was underway today and the A4130 road remained sealed off by police, eight hours after the alarm was raised.

It was believed that a passing motorist saw the blazing blue car in woodland near the winding country road at Bix, near Henley-on-Thames and dialled 999 for the police and ambulance.

Firefighters who arrived soon after being called by Thames Valley Police, said that the car had been blazing for some time before their arrival.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said that the alarm was raised at 4am and it was thought that the Toyota had been travelling through Bix towards Oxford when the driver lost control.

'We are treating this as a tragic fatal acccident and specialist officers are at the scene examining the wreckage. The road is likely to remain closed for much of the day.

'We urgently need to hear from anyone who saw the car being driven before the crash or who saw it leave the road and hit a tree,' said Sergeant Jack Hawkins, leading the investigation.

'We know that the two people killed were both men but at this stage we do not know who they were. Inquiries are ongoing to try to identify them.

A spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service said that the ambulance crew which was sent to the scene was unable to do anything for the victims who were still trapped in the car.

'They were both confirmed dead at the scene and the paramedics left,' said the spokesman.

The A4130 links Henley-on-Thames with Oxford and is a popular route for clubbers heading home to Oxford after a night out at the riverside town's clubs and pubs.
